The Deftones: Rallying point
The coma-plunge of longtime bassist Chi Cheng forced Sacramento alt-metal band Deftones to go back to basics, initiating replacement bassist Sergio Vega, rehearsing and recording as a group -- something they hadn't done since the mid-'90s. What the drawing-board return birthed was 2010's Diamond Eyes, what critics are calling a return to 20th-century Def a la Adrenaline and Around the Fur -- and what we're calling a killer robot that feels remorse and spits four-beat balls of fire.
