This is what you get when you ask The Doak for a picture. I like it..

Almost a year and a half ago, I had my first day at Kirvin Doak Communication. I didn’t know anyone. I was SUPER nervous. I’d only been in Las Vegas for two days, and so far I’d felt perpetually lost. Needless to say, KDC seemed extremely intimidating. Yet, Bill Doak, one of our partners and partial namesakes, took the time to pass by my desk that morning and say “hi” to me. I’ll never forget it. There’s nothing like have a partner take the time out of his day just to welcome you.Needless to say, I was more than happy to sit down with Bill and learn more about him.

  •  Favorite Band: Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
  • Side note: Bill shared that he and Dave recently went to a Bruce Springsteen concert together, but I was told it’s not quite the same as Alison and Lindsey’s Bon Jovi Day.

  • Role Model: “There are so many for so many different reasons,” said The Doak. They include Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla and his father.

  • Favorite Holiday: Christmas.

  • Best Gift He’s Ever Received: His children. (Awww!)

  • Favorite Beer: Sin City Stout

  • Favorite Bar in Las Vegas: Tommy Rocker’s

  • What did you want to be when you grew up? Professional football player

  • Pinch question from Alison – How do you feel about having Dustin Hoffman as a doppelganger?  “A lot less better than being told you resemble George Clooney…”

  • Tell me about living in your office during a past job: “It was my second job out of college. I didn’t have enough money for an apartment, and I didn’t know anyone. My boss allowed me to sleep on his couch, and if I was working late at the office, I’d pull my blanket over me and sleep on the floor.”

  • BONUS! Best advice: “Never stop learning. The accumulation of experiences will ultimately make you a great professional.”

On Saturday, Rí Rá Las Vegas turned the pub pink for Halloween. The authentic Irish pub encouraged guests to dress in pink and help raise funds for the Southern Nevada Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. By the end of the night, Rí Rá had collected $1,000 for the local nonprofit; not to mention, the pub looked awesome. Pink balloons cascaded from the ceiling and staff members were decked out in the most creative pink costumes. What a unique concept!

To make the event even better, cast members from PEEPSHOW, including Angel Porrino and Cheaza, started the party with a celebratory pour of the evening’s signature drink, the Pink Jameson Rose, over a pyramid of glasses. Afterwards, the group toasted to the evening with the signature cocktail.

There’s nothing like celebrating a holiday and raising money for a great cause at the same time. Happy Halloween!

Yesterday, was Mother’s Day and as I ran around town finishing my errands clerks and servers wished me a “Happy Mother’s Day” – it sort of annoyed me as I am not a mother, I am not going to be a mother and I made a choice not to be a mother.  However, as I settled in for the evening I began to  realize that I am a mother of sorts.  I am the mother to my staff: Brad, Alison, Lindsey, Matt, Devin, Kristin, Shandi, Carolyn, Ryan, Wendy and Eleni at Kirvin Doak Communications.  If being a mother means glowing with pride for their accomplishments, cheering them on with their projects, giving them wings to fly and believing in them and their abilities – well then I am a pseudo mom.  If the joy of motherhood is anything close to the love, pride and happiness I feel for my staff then you can wish me a Happy Mother’s Day ever year.

As I gallivant ever closer to my eight month anniversary at Kirvin Doak on April 22, I’m reminded of how far I’ve come since my fateful start date back in August.  I’m carrying larger responsibilities, building up my relationships in and out of the office and I’ve even rearranged my desk and workspace quite a bit from when I started (I love feng shui).  But nothing reminds me more of the strides I’ve made like showing the ropes to a new KDC employee.

That’s right – we’ve got a new addition to our team: Eleni Stylianou (five dollars if you pronounce that right on the first guess).  This is not the first time I’ve helped a new team member get acquainted to the Kirvin Doak life though; back in September we added Wendy Sloan.  But I was just one month old then, still a baby really, and Wendy and I did a majority of our growing up and learning together.  Now fully flourished PR professionals, Wendy and I have the great pleasure of helping out Eleni as she gets used to her life in Las Vegas and on our team at KDC.

Eleni, you see, is from Maryland (which is practically in the Eastern Hemisphere, as far as I’m concerned).  She comes from a village named Annapolis, where I hear they have an abundance of fresh seafood.  She’s visited Las Vegas before.  As everyone who lives in Las Vegas knows, however, visiting here and living here are two entirely different experiences.  Nonetheless, Eleni has surprised me with how quickly she’s adapted.  She’s learning our day-to-day tasks at an extremely fast (and highly efficient) pace, never sacrificing the quality of her work.  Her eagerness to integrate herself into the Las Vegas community is astonishing.  She’s already ventured to many of the properties on the Strip, engaged in Vegas nightlife, seen a big-name show and will be attending the prestigious Passport to Paradise event hosted by HELP of Southern Nevada in two days – and this is only her first week on the job!   Surely, she will only continue to great things on both personal and professional levels.

Teaching Eleni about our clients and various everyday tasks is a humbling experience because it reminds me of the steps I’ve taken in such a short period of time.  I’m both gratified to know I’ve accomplished so much and excited to help Eleni out as she grows into her new profession here.

For those who aren’t following Eleni on Twitter just yet, I highly recommend doing so.  You can follow her @PRLeni.  It’s going to be a blast watching her journey from here!

I’m not a morning person. I never have been, and I doubt I ever will be. The night before an early morning, I’m usually so concerned I’ll oversleep that I lie awake restless. As you can imagine, this doesn’t help.

When I found out I had to wake up early for work on last Thursday my immediate reaction was the same as usual – anxiety and dread. Once I took a second to get out of my head, I thought about the event I’d be attending that morning, a charitable breakfast hosted by Miracle Mile Shops.

This breakfast was for the center’s 2012 fountain fundraising partners and other local nonprofits. During the event, representatives from these organizations came together to celebrate making a change in 2012, one coin at a time.

Guests started the morning mingling with one another and enjoying a breakfast catered by PBR Rock Bar. After the meal, Angel Williams, director of community relations and business development at Miracle Mile Shops, shared the center’s 2011 community outreach results, recognized Miracle Mile Shops’ charitable partners and merchants and celebrated the Caring Giving Changing nonprofit partners for 2012.

In 2011, Miracle Mile Shops raised $100,000 for local and national nonprofit organizations. This year, the center aims to surpass that number with its Caring, Giving, Changing campaign through monthly fountain fundraisers, community sponsorships, partnerships and a number of cash and in-kind donations. Not only has the center set a sizable goal for itself, but it’s spreading the funds to several local organizations. The point is to help a variety of nonprofits and a wide range of people.

The morning was about honoring local nonprofits and working to care, give and change in 2012. I’ll never complain about waking up for that.

For the first time in my life, I know what it’s like to live on my own – no roommates, no pets, just me. In many ways, it’s been great. You don’t have to share anything, you can do want you want when you want, you don’t have to worry about being too loud – I could go on. However, it’s not all sunshine and roses. The past month and half has taught me that there are some unexpected surprises along the way. Allow me to explain a few of my discoveries.

  1. You’ll find yourself running to Target, or Wal-Mart or the grocery store for one silly item. Turns out you need a lot of stuff, especially in the kitchen and hardware department. One bedroom apartments don’t come with dish drains or can openers. These aren’t typically things you think about until you’re craving soup for the first time, but you can’t open the can. Sometimes they don’t even come with enough towel racks. If that’s the case, you’ll probably need a hammer and a screwdriver too.
  2. Nothing gets cleaned unless you do it. My last roommate, besides being one of my closest friends, was also obsessively clean. This worked out in my favor. She’d clean before anything really was dirty. These days, I can no longer rely on her to carry the brunt of the work.  If you don’t wash the dishes or do the laundry, it just piles up. This summer, I lived at home for a few months while I looked for a job. When I had dirty dishes, I’d just put them in the sink. Magically, when I’d need dishes again, they’d be clean (thanks Mom). This isn’t the case anymore.
  3. On a similar note, no one pays the bills unless you do. There’s no one else to remind you that you have to pay a bill the next day, and there’s no one there to split the cost. I might have said earlier that it’s nice not having to share, but I’d gladly share this.

And finally, the thing I probably am the least happy about…

  1. There’s no one to assign as the bug smasher. The first (or third) time to encounter a huge spider, Dad can’t come to the rescue and you can’t barter a roommate to kill it either. After about two weeks of living on my own, I found the first bug in my apartment. This was not a happy milestone and an even less happy milestone when I had to figure out how to get rid of it. In my old apartment, I would have used my roommates vacuum to suck it up. Problem: I didn’t have a big enough vacuum (another unexpected surprise for this particular evening). Now, I have designated an old shoe as my permanent bug smasher.

Among all the real joys of living on your own for the first time, there are some negatives. I’m sure I’ll find more along the journey. However, there’s nothing quite like being completely independent for the first time in your life. Now that’s a real joy.
