In PR, along with the perks comes the patience.  On Friday I finally got to experience what Team Untz is presented with when one of the world’s most famous superstar DJs comes to town.  The night began outside of XS nightclub as Terri, Alison, and I waited until it was time to enter.  It was clear that each of us had something completely different running through our minds as we stood there anxiously.  Alison was on a mission, trying to round up the several journalists and photographers expected to attend.  Terri was nervous because she knew it was going to be full of thousands of out of control party animals, which wasn’t exactly her milieu, and I was just excited to see what the night had to offer since it was my first PR experience at XS.

We enter the club and station ourselves in the media cabana where the various journalists gathered to enjoy a few complimentary cocktails.  Soon after we had to fight the rambunctious partygoers to get to our post, it was time to head back outside of XS to gather more media personnel.  Once we united with them, it was time to head back inside.  This time we settled outside, away from the madness, and waited patiently for the arrival of the 4th Anniversary cake, as well as the one and only David Guetta.  First, the cake appeared and the cameras started flashing.  Then, Mr. Guetta and his manager showed up for pictures with the cake before it was time he took the stage.  After a couple hours of waiting for journalists and photographers, taking pictures, and trekking through the powerful party haven, it was time to head to the stage.  We had to plow our way through flocks of fans as security lead the way.  We finally made it to the stage until Alison had to go back to the front to meet with another photographer.  I stayed put as she had no choice but to battle through the thousands of screaming people when Guetta had just began his set.  30 minutes later, she reappeared with the photographer.  We remained on stage and watched the DJ control the crowd as the shutterbugs snapped their shots.  However, the stage isn’t the only place photographers want to capture the moment.  Alison then had to leave the stage with the photographer at the peak of the DJ’s set and take her through the club so she could complete her purpose of action.  As I awkwardly remained on stage (because I knew nobody around me, and security kept asking who I was) admiring David Guetta, I received a text from Alison reassuring me that she was still alive.  Feet hurting and ears ringing, she made it back to the stage after what felt like an eternity.

We watched David perform for a few more moments until we decided it was time to call it an evening.  In the PR world, so many people are depending on you to do your job, so they can do theirs.  XS was depending on Alison to make sure their 4th Anniversary party gets covered by the media.  The workers of the media were depending on her to guide them during the night to make sure that their job could be completed.  Alison needed to retrieve and regulate the media to secure success.  With the perks of seeing some of the best artists at the number one club in the nation, comes the patience of having to wait, whether it be for the media, the DJ, or the cake.  It’s difficult to maneuver through jumping, dancing, fist-pumping partiers who don’t care who you are and keep a cool head when you have a job to accomplish.  When working in PR in the nightlife scene, patience is pressing.

Wow!  What a great Super Bowl on all levels on Sunday and my team didn’t even play in the big game.  Plus the team that won is my team’s biggest rival.  Yes, I am a Steelers fan and a NFL addict.  I am addicted to football. I love football.

I  just can’t get enough of America’s favorite past time and the strongest professional sports league in the world.  I love the shield and everything it represents.  I love watching a group of talented and gifted athletes working together to achieve one goal.

Football on Sundays  have become a habit for me.  Deciding what to wear on Sundays is cinch – black & gold of course.

Football is in my blood, maybe that is why I am an addict.  I was born to a high school football coach and my name Terri well was really suppose to be Terry!  My parents (or mainly my dad) wanted a boy.  However, in the end they wound up with two girls who never played football, but now love the game probably more than their parents.

Football to me is my hobby, it is my spa day and my favorite past time.  Don’t get me wrong I love sports period, but I admit I am addicted to football.

So it seems only fitting that Sunday’s Super Bowl was the longest game in history.  We, the fans, just weren’t ready to say good-bye yet.

The next 212 days will go slow, but thank goodness for the NFL combine, NFL Draft, Training Camp and NFL Network –  I will get a little something to fill my need.

I love this game.  I love the Steelers.  I love the players, past and present, for all they did and do to make Sunday my happy day!

I am an NFL junkie from birth and proud of it!

Even after fifteen years in Las Vegas, Fall is still my favorite season.  Fall in Vegas is definitely different than the mid-west, but all in all Fall is by far the best season for reasons beyond the weather and the changing of leaves. Here are my top five reasons on why I love Fall:

    1.  The return of college football.

    2.  NFL games on Thursday, Sunday and Monday.

    3.  The cool crispness in the air.

    4.  The thought that the holiday season right around the corner.

    5.  Kenny Chesney’s song:  ‘The Boys of Fall’ (Love the video: http://youtu.be/AlXDo5WhQXI)

 There is just something about Fall that makes me feel comfortable and loved.  My wish is to find the time to enjoy the sights and sounds of Fall…oh, how I love Fall.

I’ve been a Penn State Football fan for as long as I can remember.  I’ve always loved the blue and white uniforms with the plain black sneakers.  I would get goose bumps when Joe Paterno would lead the team onto the field, but this year it is the start of a new era.

I never imagined a scandal of this magnitude could or would ever happen at Penn State, but it did.

So whether you are a Penn State alum, a Penn State fan, a Penn State faculty member or a Penn State student – tomorrow a new era begins.   We will never forget the victims, but as a university and a community we MUST move forward.   I hope the nation stands with us.

I am so excited to see over 108,00 fans stand together as one on Saturday, September 1st for our team as they enter Beaver Stadium.  Thank you Bill O’Brien for your class and composure – we are truly lucky to call you Coach!

Game day you will find me cheering with the Las Vegas Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association – it just feels right to be with others who truly love Penn State as much as I do.

WE ARE…ONE TEAM!

It might have been 24 years ago, but I remember moving into Simmons Hall at Penn State just as if it were yesterday.  On Friday, my boyfriend and I moved his son, Jordan, into his dorm at the University of Nevada at Reno – I might have been more excited than him.  Months leading up to his move to UNR, I spent my spare time creating checklists for him and sharing stories with him about my time at Penn State and in the dorms.   There is nothing more exciting than going back to school or beginning your college career.

 As a freshman at Penn State in 1988, I lucked out on levels when I got my dorm assignment.  First I was assigned to Simmons Hall which was located in the middle of campus a block away from College Avenue and directly across from the Hub.   I got the best roommate ever, Janice Appleby, who was  from Camp Hill, PA.  We also were on the fourth floor (top floor) and we got a corner room with two windows.  I thought I had it the jackpot and as I look back I did on all levels.

Times have changed in regards to dorm rooms and college since I was a freshman such as:

 Dorm rooms are definitely much bigger;

  • Dorm rooms now normally include a private a bathroom, no community bathroom down hall;
  • Dorm rooms now have cable;
  • Dorms rooms include carpet;
  • Dorms have free Wifi;
  • Convenience like none other, you can purchase all your dorm necessities at Bed, Bath & Beyond (or other retailers) online and merely have it shipped to your dorm room;
  • Most dining halls now resembles a Las Vegas buffet.

 But some things about moving into the dorms and being a freshman will never change such as:

  • The anticipation of meeting your roommate, neighbors on the floor and your RA;
  • Decorating your dorm room;
  •  Memorizing your schedule;
  • Knowing where your classes are;
  • That first meal in the dining hall;
  • Saying goodbye to your parents.

I know Jordan is doing great today at UNR as he starts classes and I hope he looks back on the past four days and his entire four years at UNR as fondly as I do 24 years later.   My four years at Penn State were some of the best years of my life and they truly had a huge impact on who I am today.

Yesterday, was Mother’s Day and as I ran around town finishing my errands clerks and servers wished me a “Happy Mother’s Day” – it sort of annoyed me as I am not a mother, I am not going to be a mother and I made a choice not to be a mother.  However, as I settled in for the evening I began to  realize that I am a mother of sorts.  I am the mother to my staff: Brad, Alison, Lindsey, Matt, Devin, Kristin, Shandi, Carolyn, Ryan, Wendy and Eleni at Kirvin Doak Communications.  If being a mother means glowing with pride for their accomplishments, cheering them on with their projects, giving them wings to fly and believing in them and their abilities – well then I am a pseudo mom.  If the joy of motherhood is anything close to the love, pride and happiness I feel for my staff then you can wish me a Happy Mother’s Day ever year.

Some of you may simply not understand why the passing of Joe Paterno, our beloved head coach, has been so hard on the Penn State community and that is okay.  However, don’t pass judgment on us…let us grieve and say good-bye to JoePa.  There is no other place like Happy Valley and unless you were a student at Penn State or had a family member attend, you will probably never understand how magically a place it is.  I will never forget Joe Paterno – he’s been a household name in my home since I can remember. He was one of the driving forces in my decision to attend Penn State, not solely because he was the head football coach, but because of the person he was and what he stood for.  He made Penn State a better place from what he did on and most importantly off the football field.  I will be a Nittany Lion forever and I promise to live my life “The Paterno Way!”  He wasn’t perfect, but he recognized his mistakes.  At this time of reflection, let us not overlook the good he did do for others and the impact he made with many.  My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Paterno Family and the Penn State Community during this difficult time.

Below are some of my favorite Joe Paterno quotes, may his love and passion for life, family, football and Penn State live on forever:

“Believe deep down in your heart that you’re destined to do great things.” -Joe Paterno
“The name on the front of the jersey is what really matters, not the name on the back.” -Joe Paterno
“Success without honor is an unseasoned dish; it will satisfy your hunger, but it won’t taste good.” -Joe Paterno
“Besides pride, loyalty, discipline, heart and mind – confidence is the key to all the locks.” -Joe Paterno

“They ask me what I’d like written about me when I’m gone. I hope they write I made Penn State a better place, not just that I was a good football coach.” –Joe Paterno

Across the country a lot of people spend their Sunday evenings dreading what they know is coming in a few short hours: the sound of their alarm clock Monday morning, signaling the beginning of the long and often stressful work week.  This is probably especially true the Sunday following Thanksgiving, when people want to continue to bask in the holiday laze of family, food and football.  It is hard, after all, to leave the comfort of hometowns and sweatpants for the office.

I, however, experienced something quite different this past Sunday, Nov. 27.  While most of my Kirvin Doak co-workers were traveling back to Las Vegas, I sat in the emergency room waiting in agony to find out what was wrong with me.  As the extreme pain in my stomach continued to grow, nurses and doctors continued to run more tests.  Waiting for the results of blood work, a CAT scan, ultrasound and a few other unpleasant procedures, I became more and more concerned that whatever was going on wasn’t simply a bad case of the flu or food poisoning.

“What’s going on?” I asked my mother, “What’s going to happen?”

“I don’t know, honey,” she said.  “We have to wait to see when we get the tests back.”

“But I want to go to work tomorrow,” I cried, never before realizing how much I really love my job.

What ended up happening was an emergency appendectomy Sunday night.  I was released from the hospital Monday evening, and when I got home I received a visit from none other than Terri Maruca – a reminder of why I wanted so badly to get back to the office.

Terri brought me a baby Christmas tree, a card signed by my colleagues and their get well wishes.  While others may not understand, this level of personal care is what makes Kirvin Doak Communications such a great agency to work at and to be represented by.

Wednesday afternoon, despite my mother’s protests, I returned to Kirvin Doak, and although I’m still a bit tired and sore from the surgery – man, did it feel great to be out of bed and back in the office.

Christmas tree in the lobby of KDC. It was especially exciting to return to work with everything decorated!

In 1986, I was a junior at Woodridge High School in Peninsula, Ohio and trying to find the “perfect” college for me.  That Fall, my mom and I took a “college knowledge” tour of my top two choices:  Pennsylvania State University and Villanova University.  Ironically, both schools were coming off NCAA Championship’s:  Penn State for football and Villanova for basketball.  My love of sports started at a very young age and I knew I wanted to attend a big school with a strong athletic program.  Now I had to decide would I go to a football school or basketball school?

We visited Penn State first and we arrived in Happy Valley – I knew that this was the place for me.  I loved it from afar, but once we got out of the car and walked around the campus I knew it was love.  It felt like home and I felt comfortable there.  I knew immediately that this is where I wanted to be a college student.  We still drove to Villanova after our visit to Penn State, but I never got out of the car.  I knew I had found the place for me in Penn State, so why waste our time in touring Villanova?

I applied and was accepted in 1987 to Penn State.  When I received that acceptance letter in the mail – I became a Nittany Lion for LIFE.

My four years at Penn State where probably some of the best years of my life.  I made dear friends, I grew up, I made mistakes, I made good choices, I ate bad, I did good in school, I loved volunteering for THON, I did not so good in Latin, I loved going to Beaver Stadium on Saturdays, I hated winters in State College, I loved the HUB, I had BIG hair and when it was time to graduate, I was sad to leave.

So you can only imagine how hard the past three weeks have been for me.  I am so proud to be an alumni of PSU.  Yes, I love Penn State football and have always held Joe Paterno in high regards for everything he did on and off the field.  Today it is hard to believe that the action of a few could turn our university and community upside down.  My prayers go out to the victims and their families.  We can’t take away what happen to them, but we came make sure it never happens again.  We must do whatever we can to raise awareness for sexual abuse and most importantly ensure that those that are guilty of wrong doings are punished.

I love Penn State.  I love the role it had in molding me into the person I am today.  I am so proud to be of one of the 577,000 living alumni.    There is no other place like Happy Valley.  It will take time, but I promise to do whatever I can to help get us back to Penn State – Success With Honors.   We Are Penn State and I will forever be a Nittany Lion!

I’ve been a Steelers fan ever since I can remember.  There were the teams of the 70′s when my favorite players were Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris and Jack Lambert.  I loved those teams that won four Super Bowls.  Our family at that time lived in Greenville, PA (an hour or so west of Pittsburgh).  I remember we would “decorate” our house for Super Bowl just like we would for Christmas.  My dad would buy my mom and grandma a “Black & Gold” corsage to wear to church before the big game.  I guess it would be fair to say, I was born a Steelers fans.

The 80′s were hard as the Steelers glory days were over and my family moved to a suburb of Cleveland during Cardiac Kid Days, but my love never wavered.

The 90′s brought us back to the Super Bowl, but for the first time we didn’t win it.   My support was still there, but just different as I made my way through college and entered the “real world.”

Today, my life is in Las Vegas, but I  attend more Steelers games than I ever did when living in Pennsylvania.  Today, I am a Steelers season ticket holder who lives in Las Vegas.  Today, I probably own 10 Steelers jerseys and 25 T-shirts – I always need just own more. Today, I have been fortunate to attend Super Bowl XLIII and XLV.  I witnessed an incredible last second win and a heartbreaking loss.

But do you know how I know it is true love?  Earlier this month at the Titans game, my sister and I (aka Steelers super fans) won field passes and we were nervous.  How could we be nervous?  We live a charmed and sometimes unreal life as publicists in Las Vegas.  We attend mega-resort grand openings, walk celebrities like Kim Kardashian down red carpets and work on events like Electric Daisy Carnival that attract crowds of over 200,000, but put us on the grass at Heinz Field steps away from our team and we get butterflies.

There is only one explanation and that is love…we love our Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s hard to explain, but the love of the sport, team, players and city is special.  It’s a tradition, a way of life and something that brings us true happiness.

I still get butterflies watching “my team” run onto the field.  I love this team and love how they make me feel win or lose. I think some people would call it a love affair.

Sister and I will be in Phoenix this weekend cheering on our boys…The Pittsburgh Steelers.
