Which one is Christy Miller?

Which one is Christy Miller?

Over the past few weeks the members of Team Terri have been sticking our noses into the lives of our fellow co-workers at Kirvin Doak. Having been here for almost six months, I have realized that there is still much to learn about the many faces of this amazing company.

I was fortunate enough to get the chance to speak with Christy Miller, a true Las Vegan. Having originally been born in San Luis Obispo, Cali, Miller moved to Atlanta, GA. When Christy was five years old, she and her family moved to the vibrant city of Las Vegas. After spending her life in Sin City, Christy went on to college and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Even at 26-years-old, I like to think I am just a big kid at heart. Instead of asking the traditional questions, I wanted to take this opportunity and have some fun with Christy. So here is an inside look at Christy Miller’s inner child.

JD:          What did you want to be growing up?

CM:        Optometrist, like my uncle & grandpa.

JD:          If you could be a fictional character, who would you be and why?

CM:        Mary Poppins, she is practically perfect in every way, imagination and fun first, to heck with health and safety.

JD:          Ben and Jerry’s would like you to create a new ice cream. What would you create and why?

CM:        Lactose FREE, so I could have some.  Then a combo of my favorite peach pie with Vanilla Bean, oh, and Grandma’s Cream! Why, because it reminds me wonderful times.

JD:          If you could go on a picnic, what would be in your basket?

CM:        Wine for me, beer for the hubby, water, cold pasta salad, fresh fruit, a soccer ball, frisbee, blanket and a good book.

JD:          If your life was a movie, who would you play?

CM:        Oh my, I’ve never thought about it, Meg Ryan.

JD:          What is the best gift you were ever given?

CM:        LIFE! I have two beautiful children and an extra special guy.

JD:          What is your favorite word?

CM:        It must be AWESOME; I’m told I say it all the time!

JD:          If you were immortal for a day, what would you do?

CM:        I want to fly like a bird in the air.

JD:          What songs are included in the soundtrack to your life?

CM:        It would have to be really eclectic, I enjoy it all, from The Sex Pistols to Tchaikovsky.

Here are some of the things on my nano: The Beatles, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, Elton John, Carly Simon, Carol King, Commodores, Donna Summers, Janis Joplin, Jethro Tull, Moody Blues,  Doobie Brothers, Foreigner, Earth Wind and Fire, Ike and Tina Turner, Elvis Presley, Erick Clapton, Bon Jovi, BB Kings, Quincy Jones, Curtis Mayfield, Billy Joel, Grover Washington, Rascal Flatt, Oakridge Boys, Adelle, Barbara Streisand, Beach Boys, Bee Gees, Sondheim, Rogers and Hammerstein, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Jars of Clay, Mercy Me, Rich Mullins, Third Day, DC Talk,Tchaikovsky and Beethoven.

I left Michigan more than three years ago and moved to Chicago. I wanted to get my Masters (which I successfully did after two years) and then move back to Michigan with my family. Little did I know how drastically my plans would eventually change.  After picking up and moving across the country, 1,879 miles to be exact, I found myself in Las Vegas. I never saw myself living so far away from my family and friends, but after the past two months of working at Kirvin Doak Communications, I have acquired a new family and new friends.  I was worried that it would be like my previous jobs I had in Chicago, all work and no play. Fortunately life in Las Vegas is nothing as I had expected it to be, and wow, it has been so much more.

My first day on the job I participated in a photo shoot for one of my clients… kind of a great start to a new job if I may say! Since working here, I have explored so much more of this city than I ever did in my previous home. My second weekend in Las Vegas, my birthday weekend, I ventured across the city to downtown Las Vegas – territory I didn’t even know existed – to see a One Republic concert at the D. After spending an eventful night out with some of the girls of KDC, it could possibly be one of my new stomping grounds.

Halloween came around and wow what an experience. The office split up into our teams and we proceeded to build our own version of a haunted house. Team Terri, my team, decided to put a fun twist on the holiday… Haunted Christmas! What can be worse than a creepy Christmas with amputated elves, dead dolls, a dead Mrs. Clause and a butchered Santa Clause?  Not much in my book! Clearly I was right because we tied for second place. That wasn’t even the best part of Halloween.  Kirvin Doak has a costume contest every year with a celebrity guest judge, and this year it was Mr. Las Vegas himself, Mr. Wayne Newton.  Of course I would have preferred to have met him looking a bit more “alive” than I was, but what a way to spend Halloween.

I have always been a family-oriented individual, so when Thanksgiving came around, I was counting down the days until I could see my family and friends and most importantly my adorable eight-month-old nephew. While I had an amazing time visiting with everyone and catching up, it took me all of two days to be ready to head back to Las Vegas. I was eager to get back to my new life. While working for Team Terri at Kirvin Doak I have been given the opportunity to experience so much more here than any other place I have ever worked or lived before. With concerts, silent auctions, harvest festivals, beer festivals, masquerade parties, BMG, comedy shows, grand openings, Christmas shows and the people I work with my past two months in this city has been more than I ever could have imagined it could be. Moving and working here has only ensured that the sky’s the limit. I look forward to seeing what is next to come with the New Year quickly approaching.

I never thought I would be the one to say this, but I love my job!

As a Portland, Oregon native and a recent graduate from the University of Arizona, I found myself moving to Las Vegas just over three weeks ago and beginning my dream job with Kirvin Doak Communications. My first week was absolutely amazing! Under the guidance of Matt Guidish and the other members of Team Terri, I feel like I have already learned so much.

My second day on the job I was able to participate in the KDC Day of Service with Boys and Girls Clubs from around the Las Vegas area. My group volunteered at the Donald W. Reynolds Clubhouse in Henderson, where we got to decorate boards and banners for the upcoming year. The theme at this particular clubhouse was from the popular Dr. Seuss book Oh, The Places You’ll Go. I found myself relating to the theme immediately with regard to my new home and job. I began to wonder what places I would go on my journey with KDC… and my first stop, the Nevada Mining Association Convention (NVMA) in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

This past weekend Matt and I attended the NVMA convention in Lake Tahoe. I was incredibly eager to attend this event because I had very little knowledge about mining in Nevada. I was hoping the convention would answer a lot of these questions for me, and it definitely did.

The first night we attended a dinner reception where I was able to meet NVMA President Tim Crowley and Director of Public Affairs Dylan Shaver. These two gentlemen are some of the most passionate people I have ever met. Their love and respect for the mining industry only made me love and respect it more! The next day during the conference I was amazed at the amount of information I was able to absorb. I took countless notes throughout every presentation and could not wait to get back to work on Monday and start researching all of the information. Overall, I think the weekend was a great learning experience for me and I am so lucky to have had the opportunity to attend.

Remembering now my second day of work volunteering at Boys and Girls Club and their theme Oh, The Places You’ll Go, I think to myself, I don’t know much about what the future holds for me, but what I know for sure is that I couldn’t be happier to have found such a wonderful job with even more wonderful coworkers!

Every college grad dreads that one question, “So, what are you doing now?”

My family couldn’t believe me when I told them I was moving to Las Vegas. I got the job offer call three hours before my graduation party, which was perfect, because I finally had an answer to that horrible post-graduation question!

A common reply to the news was, “Moving to Vegas! To do what? Be a showgirl?” I would then sarcastically reply with, “How’d you know?” then explain to them where I’d actually be working, Kirvin Doak Communications.

I was due to move in merely two weeks. Moving from small-town Iowa to Las Vegas has been a big change for me. I used to live in a town of 1,200, and now all a sudden I live 24 hours away in “the city that never sleeps!” This adventure has brought about a lot of “firsts” for me in the last week…

The drive here was quite eventful. My parents rented a Penske truck to move all my belongings. After they had already rented it and paid for it, they took a look inside. There were only two seats for the three of us. They broke the news to me as I was saying goodbye to my friends one last time at the pool.

I said, “Great, I’ll fly out to Vegas on Friday and have more time with my friends before I leave!”

My mom quickly replied with, “Oh no, you’re enduring the drive with us. I’ll just buy you a bean bag and put it between the two seats.”

I thought to myself, “Is this real life?”

I honestly can’t tell you the last time I sat on a bean bag or the last time I sat on a bean bag and enjoyed it. Despite these unfortunate issues, I drove in between my parents for 24 hours from Iowa to Las Vegas, NV on a bean bag. Bet you can’t say you’ve ever done that- there is truly a first time for everything!

The “firsts” don’t stop there. This past week, I bought my first new car! I said “hasta luego” to my trusty 1999 red Cavalier in Iowa because I have driven that car since I was 14, it had over 200,000 miles on it and it did not have air conditioning- I thought all these reasons were completely valid. Therefore, I’m very excited to say I’m a proud owner of a new Nissan Sentra!

I also had my first week at KDC. Everybody has been very nice, supportive and helpful on my transition to Las Vegas and into my new job. With the assistance of Devin Daniel and Lindsey Rathjen, I’ve already done a bunch of stuff for Team Terri, and I’m very excited to continue learning from them- Devin even guided me as I drove for my first time on the Strip, which was not as bad as I anticipated.

Last but certainly not least, I celebrated National Doughnut Day for the first time today at KDC, and I really hope it’s not the last.
