Halloween

On Saturday, Rí Rá Las Vegas turned the pub pink for Halloween. The authentic Irish pub encouraged guests to dress in pink and help raise funds for the Southern Nevada Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. By the end of the night, Rí Rá had collected $1,000 for the local nonprofit; not to mention, the pub looked awesome. Pink balloons cascaded from the ceiling and staff members were decked out in the most creative pink costumes. What a unique concept!

To make the event even better, cast members from PEEPSHOW, including Angel Porrino and Cheaza, started the party with a celebratory pour of the evening’s signature drink, the Pink Jameson Rose, over a pyramid of glasses. Afterwards, the group toasted to the evening with the signature cocktail.

There’s nothing like celebrating a holiday and raising money for a great cause at the same time. Happy Halloween!

Since the opening of Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, many employees and visitors have felt, heard and witnessed paranormal activity inside the galleries.  One of the most haunted Exhibitions is in Las Vegas at Luxor Hotel and Casino.
Paranormal activity has ranged from feeling as if someone is following you to actual ghost sightings. However, one of the most bizarre events involved a photo of Bruce Ismay, the Ship’s designer who decided to reduce the number of lifeboats onboard RMS Titanic. While the morning crew was preparing to open, they noticed a photo of Ismay on the floor leaning against the wall, completely undamaged. When the manager reviewed the surveillance footage to see how the picture ended up on the floor, what he saw was unbelievable. The picture began to shake and then, very gently, lowered to the floor. There was not a single person in sight. Could it be that lost Titanic passengers are upset over Ismay’s devastating decision and would like his memory removed from the Exhibition?
Another report that has been repeated by staff members and guests alike is of seeing a woman wearing a black period dress with a white collar and her hair in a bun.  She is now known as “The Lady in Black,” although no one knows exactly who she is or was. On one occasion a photo crewmember was setting up in preparation for the Exhibition to open when he noticed a lady in black walking down the Grand Staircase. This puzzled him because he never saw anyone walk in and the doors weren’t open yet. He proceeded to ask the lady if she would like her photo taken but she did not reply. As the crewmember went back to work he suddenly felt someone behind him; when he turned it was the same lady. Again he asked if she would like her photo taken but her only response was to slowly disappear before his eyes.
While the ghosts who haunt Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition don’t cause any harm, one thing is for sure, their spirits live on just as the story of Titanic does.

This weekend, I had the pleasure of attending After Dark at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas.  I also had the displeasure of going to see Paranormal Activity 3.  Today, I would like to break down both events for you and explain why one is worth your Halloween weekend and why the other isn’t even worth a Redbox rental.

On Thursday, Oct. 20, Madame Tussauds Las Vegas hosted a media night to preview the 2011 After Dark attraction and I was lucky enough to attend this function.  After Dark is a haunted version of the world-famous wax museum that opens up each year for the two weekends leading up to Halloween.  I’m a huge fan of getting scared by haunted houses and horror movies, but I didn’t think After Dark would be nearly as terrifying as it actually was – and I mean that in the best way possible!  After assisting with the media check-ins, I anxiously waited for their reactions once they left the attraction.  While each person’s demeanor upon leaving was different (some came out running, some came out sweating, some came out thrilled), everyone unanimously agreed it was a frighteningly glorious time.  After most people had gone through, my boss Brad and I decided to go through the attraction.  My other boss, Terri, politely declined the invitation to join us.  Within moments, Brad and I were standing at the entrance to a dark corridor.  Joined by a few other guests, I was elected to lead the group with nothing but a glowstick.  Slowly, we made our way into the first hallway where shadowy figures moved around, setting the scene for what was ultimately an exhilarating experience.  Each of the rooms were styled differently, but the one common thread each room brilliantly encompassed was the utilization of the wax figures – you never knew what was fake and what was real!  Many of the figures I thought were wax would sporadically come to life to jump out and scare the group.  The uncertainty of everything was what made this haunted attraction one of the most unique I’d ever visited.  Thankfully, I made it out alive and am glad to be here so I can tell everyone to check it out as well!

Unfortunately, my Sunday night was not nearly as invigorating.  My roommate and I decided to grab dinner at Town Square then catch a showing of Paranormal Activity 3.  I had fortunately seen the first two movies, so I was excited to see where the story would go from here.  In my opinion, the first movie wasn’t very great, but the second one truly did have moments that made me jump, complete with an unexpected twist at the end which tied it back to the first movie.  I won’t give anything away, but in a nutshell, the entire Paranormal Activity series is about a family being haunted by a demon of sorts.  The third installment was a prequel, taking the audience back to the days of how the “activity” started within this one particular family.  Sure, there were a few good moments where characters jumped out, etc.  But for the most part, the entire audience laughed during moments that were supposed to be considered scary.  The invevitable twist at the end wasn’t expected, but it also wasn’t satisfying.  The end of the film was abrupt, with audience members shouting disapproving comments like “Really?!” and “That’s it?!”  One of my least favorite aspects about the film was the fact that many of the moments in the movie trailer weren’t present in the actual film, leaving the audience expecting more than was actually delivered.

To recap: After Dark at Madame Tussauds exceeded expectations, providing authentic adventure, excitement and thrills.  Paranormal Activity 3, on the other hand, was a snoozefest.

More than any other holiday weekend in Vegas, there is a lot of build up around Halloween. What has partygoers filled with anticipation is that the weekend is not only about where you will be, it’s also about WHAT you will be!

The “where I will be” part is easy for Halloween in Vegas: the 14th Annual Nightmare on 54th Street at Studio 54 at MGM Grand. This will be my second year working the infamous weekend-long party at Studio 54, and I could not be more excited! The nightclub is outdoing itself once again with three nights of outrageous festivities, including DJ Loczi’s “Electric Scream” Friday, Oct. 28, Holly Madison’s 3rd Annual Hollyween with a special performance by Josh Strickland Saturday, Oct. 29 and the 45th Annual Beaux Arts Ball Halloween night, benefitting Golden Rainbow’s fight against HIV/AIDS. Aerialists, wall-walkers, the tempting “Snake Babe” and a show-stopping reenactment of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” are just a few of the spine-tingling attractions throughout the weekend at Studio 54.

The “what I will be” part is not coming as easy this year. Last year, my co-worker and I were a “crime scene.” I was a cop and she was caution tape (creative, we know), and I’m wondering if I will be able to top that this Halloween. I have read that this year’s costume trends are based off current events and pop culture, such as Charlie Sheen, Angry Birds, Steve Jobs (too soon), vampires, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.  I would like to consider myself a little more original than those options, but I’m not sure how I’m going to compete with the costumes I’ve heard around the office. My KDC colleagues are going far and wide this year with Kate Middleton, Cookie Monster, Teen Mom, Spicy and Hot Taco Bell sauce and the precious metal silver. I’m sure I will figure something out before KDC’s secret celebrity guest judges our annual Halloween costume contest, but in the meantime, I’m currently taking suggestions via twitter: @maggie_holmes.

Terry Fator selects winners of KDC Costume Contest

Terry Fator selects winners of KDC Costume Contest

It would almost be understandable, as busy as we all are in these times, to allow a slightly frivolous tradition to slip. You get busy. There’s only so many hours. There’s always next year.

Which is what made Friday at KDC so great.

For the last several years, we’ve made Halloween our holiday. Each team decorates their part of the office, the costumes get broken out, someone famous stops by at lunch to judge our costume contest and our kids and those of our friends go office-to-office trick-or-treating.

We could have let all the things on our collective to-do list temper this year’s celebration. But no way. The costume contest was bigger – and more inspired – than ever. Our special Celebrity Guest Judge was Mirage headliner  Terry Fator, who took his role seriously and couldn’t have been nicer.

Debbi Medsker as Mrs. Potatohead took top honors, followed by Ashlee Miller as Winston the Puppet from Terry Fator’s show (taking “sucking up to the judge” to new heights) and Judy Chappell as a wicked pirate taking third. We also had an awesome Kenny Powers (Brad Seidel) a fashionista nun (Claudia Cogburn), some evil surgeons (Kala Peterson, Lindsay Rathjen and Melanie Shafer), “Blackmail” (a very clever Liz Lundstrom), Jamie Oliver The Naked Chef (Bonnie Smith) and two frat boys who used their costume as an excuse to have beer (Craig Nyman and Matt Guidish).

Young trick-or-treaters came by to make Mr. and Mrs. Pumpkinhead toys and put their hands in some brains and innards and eyeballs. And they made off with a lot of candy, too. Take a look at the photos. Yes, it actually was as much fun as it looks. And if you’re in the neighborhood next year, stop by. It will only be better.

Halloween is always a big weekend for us at KDC. In addition to our annual  office Halloween decorating contest – which seems much more tame this year than last (we will miss you smoke machines) – our awesome clients have a few “frighteningly freaky” events for you take part in. Okay, that wasn’t the best way to describe them, but you get the drift. See if you can check out the following:

- Get 50% off tickets to THE LION KING at Mandalay Bay (orch and front mezz seats – use code “lion” when ordering), and a free Disney gift to anyone in costume.
- Nightmare on 54th Street at Studio 54
- Easter Seals of Southern Nevada’s Great Pumpkin Run (BONUS: you can bring the kiddies to this one!)
- “Holly-ween” with Holly Madison at Studio 54
Night of the Killer Costumes at Rain Nightclub, ghostbar, Moon Nightclub,  and Playboy Club
- Fetish & Fantasy Ball at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

So, now you just have one  problem… what are you going as? (Insert evil laugh). Happy Halloween Las Vegas! Oh, and P.S. Happy Nevada Day!
