Clara.pngMany people think that PR professionals have the same old story—complete an internship, graduate college, find a job in PR. Fellow KDCer Clara Tsang took a more untraditional route by way of Hawaii. Clara attended Carleton College in Minnesota to study volcanology. She interned during her undergraduate career in Hawaii and took a few courses at the University of Bristol, which helped her secure a job in the Aloha State after college. She did everything from collecting lava samples, to trekking across 15-mile craters on daily hikes to climbing on active volcanoes. Her usual transportation included helicopters—not cars.

After a brief stint in Hawaii, Clara decided she wanted to take PR classes at New York University. She was in charge of the PSAs at her job in Hawaii and enjoyed the writing. This eventually led her to Kirvin Doak Communications, where she has been a member of the team for over two years. Highlights of Clara’s job as a publicist include almost stepping on the toes of celebrity chef Bobby Flay, meeting a dolphin named Thunder at The Mirage’s dolphin habitat and being fed on-camera by celebrity chef Bradley Ogden.

As for her dream job (other than KDC, of course)? “I’d like to be a steak house critic. I love eating meat,” says Tsang.

Las Vegas transformed into a foodie paradise May 10-13 as well-known chefs from Bellagio, Caesars Palace, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas and Mandalay Bay teamed up to present once-in-a-lifetime events. With the lure of having more celebrity chefs per square foot than anywhere else in the world, Vegas Uncork’d has always been a popular festival with discerning palates. During these four days, The Strip was full of happy food lovers sharing treasured photos taken with their favorite celebrity chefs, the staggering variety of great food they sampled, and stories of their interactions with the culinary icons.

But no one was excited as I was. A devoted foodie at heart, I was thrilled to be working on the city’s premier food & wine event and even more excited for an insider look. What I did not expect, however, was meeting talented, five-star chefs and eventually becoming friends with them.

I first met Chef Bradley Ogden, owner and chef of his namesake restaurant in Caesars Palace, along with other participating chefs during the Vegas kick-off event in February, when we broke the Guinness World Record for uncorking the most bottles of wine simultaneously. Bradley has a great sense of humor and a charm in front of the camera that endears him to audiences, making him one of my favorite chefs to work alongside. As Vegas Uncork’d approached, we quickly developed a working relationship that resulted in a funny episode during the Grand Tasting.

Accompanying the photographer around the Grand Tasting, my job was to take photos of the event atmosphere, food dishes and the chefs themselves. It sure sounded easy – until I discovered the chefs had all left their stations to mingle with the crowd and eat at each other’s booths. So for the next two hours, I weaved in and out of a crowd of 2,500+ in a five-acre pool garden trying to find chefs.
When I finally found Bradley with a captivated crowd around him, I breathed a sigh of relief and checked off his name in the long list of participating chefs. But he had another challenge for me before he would allow the photographer to take a picture. Our conversation went as follows:

Me: “Bradley! I’m so glad I found you! Can our photographer take a photo of you and your food please?”
Bradley: “Hi there! I can, but only if you will eat my food.” (Holds up a dish and starts piling it on a fork.)
Me: “I’m working so I can’t eat. Please? I just need one photo.”
Bradley: “No. Just one little bite. You need to eat even if you’re working.”

In the end, he refused to budge and I shyly ate a bite of deliciousness in front of flashing bulbs and a curious crowd of on-lookers. Always stationed behind the camera, I was mortified. True to his word, he then posed for the camera with a charming smile.

Not only did Vegas Uncork’d manage to serve up sumptuous bites from acclaimed chefs, it also gave the public a chance to get to know their favorite chefs. For me, I was lucky enough to become friends with them.

Bellagio Room Remodel

Bellagio is known for its timeless charm and elegance and has always represented the standard for luxury resort to me. It is undoubtedly one of the finest resorts on the strip and now, after the recent remodel that cost $70 million, it has set a new luxury standard for its peers. I was fortunate enough to have the chance to preview one of the redesigned rooms.

Upon entering the newly renovated room at Bellagio, I felt a sense of calm as I was surrounded by a silver leather headboard, indigo accent lamps, a modern feature wall and a marble-top counter set against a backdrop of the famous Bellagio Fountains and the Las Vegas mountains. I was particularly surprised by the touch of fresh flowers, a wide selection of tea and soft, plush bathrobes hanging in the wardrobe. These warm gestures reveal the care and foresight Bellagio’s staff takes into consideration to prepare an inviting hotel room for weary travelers.

Here are a few of the new amenities that I find most exceptional:

- Miss your own bed? A very unlikely scenario here since you can sleep like royalty on a cashmere-covered Bellagio at Home® mattress that’s newly developed by Serta.
- For business travelers, you can connect your laptop, smartphone and iPad to a centralized media hub designed to accommodate a variety of digital devices.
- Plugging in is now easier than ever! Bellagio’s design team included electrical outlets on the bedside lamps for easy access.
- Feel safe and secure with any valuables stored in a laptop safe right next to you in one of the nightstands.
Also, if blue and silver are not for you, choose a green tea and plum or an amber and butterscotch room instead, all of which face the majestic Fountains.

So, if you’re planning a trip to Las Vegas in the near future, book a stay at Bellagio and check out the new rooms! I highly recommend it!

Do you know where the last coin-operated slot machine is on the Strip? I bet you don’t, and a month ago, neither did I. (It’s the Blazing 7’s at Circus Circus)

When I first came to Las Vegas and joined KDC’s MGM Resorts team, I spent as much time as I could going over document after document, trying to familiarize myself with the ten casino/hotel properties that I now represent. And let’s be realistic here. It’s hard to memorize 50+ room products, another 50+ spa products, plus another 30+ attractions all in one week before I jumped on the pitching machine.

Fast forward. It’s been four months now, and I’m glad to say I know the hotels well enough that I can visualize different story angles. But, I still don’t know everything.

That became glaringly obvious to me when I was invited on guided tours at each of the properties. I was blown away at how much I didn’t know. MGM’s PR veterans compared room rates, showcased top amenities and shared their secrets of best places for journalists to experience Las Vegas, all without batting an eyelash.

Clearly, reading doesn’t mean knowing.

And now, after hours of hiking through hallways and restaurants, learning insider tips and riding on two roller coasters, I’m slowly grasping the whole picture of each property.  Best of all, I’m pitching from my own first-hand experience in addition to the memorized facts.

It’s important to get to know your clients. Take an afternoon and go visit them, listen for insider tips, and see a different side of the product through their eyes. And it’s even better when one of them has a dolphin habitat.

Here are a few things that I learnt from these adventures:

1. The Roller Coaster at New York-New York is scary. Really scary.
2. The next time I want to go to a Mandalay Bay Beach concert, you’ll find me grabbing a bite at the outdoor terrace of Border Grill. Talk about sitting right on top of the stage!
3. Mandalay Bay suites have interesting mini-bar items such as the travel box (razor, slaving cream, comb etc.) and the…er… love box. I’ll let you figure that out yourself.
4. There are beer pong tables in Excalibur. ‘Nuff said.
5. And my favorite hidden gem: Circus Circus has gorgeous rooms and unbeatable room rates that are rarely advertised. Not to mention their resort passport includes two free drinks and two free rides at Adventuredome.

*MGM Resorts International properties in Las Vegas include CityCenter, Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, The Mirage, Monte Carlo, New York-New York, Luxor, Excalibur and Circus Circus.
