Do you know where the last coin-operated slot machine is on the Strip? I bet you don’t, and a month ago, neither did I. (It’s the Blazing 7’s at Circus Circus)

When I first came to Las Vegas and joined KDC’s MGM Resorts team, I spent as much time as I could going over document after document, trying to familiarize myself with the ten casino/hotel properties that I now represent. And let’s be realistic here. It’s hard to memorize 50+ room products, another 50+ spa products, plus another 30+ attractions all in one week before I jumped on the pitching machine.

Fast forward. It’s been four months now, and I’m glad to say I know the hotels well enough that I can visualize different story angles. But, I still don’t know everything.

That became glaringly obvious to me when I was invited on guided tours at each of the properties. I was blown away at how much I didn’t know. MGM’s PR veterans compared room rates, showcased top amenities and shared their secrets of best places for journalists to experience Las Vegas, all without batting an eyelash.

Clearly, reading doesn’t mean knowing.

And now, after hours of hiking through hallways and restaurants, learning insider tips and riding on two roller coasters, I’m slowly grasping the whole picture of each property.  Best of all, I’m pitching from my own first-hand experience in addition to the memorized facts.

It’s important to get to know your clients. Take an afternoon and go visit them, listen for insider tips, and see a different side of the product through their eyes. And it’s even better when one of them has a dolphin habitat.

Here are a few things that I learnt from these adventures:

1. The Roller Coaster at New York-New York is scary. Really scary.
2. The next time I want to go to a Mandalay Bay Beach concert, you’ll find me grabbing a bite at the outdoor terrace of Border Grill. Talk about sitting right on top of the stage!
3. Mandalay Bay suites have interesting mini-bar items such as the travel box (razor, slaving cream, comb etc.) and the…er… love box. I’ll let you figure that out yourself.
4. There are beer pong tables in Excalibur. ‘Nuff said.
5. And my favorite hidden gem: Circus Circus has gorgeous rooms and unbeatable room rates that are rarely advertised. Not to mention their resort passport includes two free drinks and two free rides at Adventuredome.

*MGM Resorts International properties in Las Vegas include CityCenter, Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, The Mirage, Monte Carlo, New York-New York, Luxor, Excalibur and Circus Circus.

There is no doubt that CityCenter is one of the most significant projects in the history of Las Vegas. Chairman and CEO of MGM MIRAGE, Jim Murren had this to say about the public relations effort on the project:

“Global earned media has been tremendous for the launch of CityCenter…over 1 billion global impressions…our PR team has done a tremendous job.”

Thanks, Mr. Murren. It was our pleasure to be part of what was truly a team effort. See more about the opening of CityCenter and what it means to this community by watching this video of Jim Murren on ARIA’s opening day.

It’s not every day that you get to move into a brand new hotel, see a sneak peek preview performance of a new Cirque du Soleil show and, better yet, dine at some of the most incredible new restaurant venues in the city…with about 130 of your friends and colleagues. But, when you work in public relations and have the opportunity to host over 100 fantastic journalists at Las Vegas’ newest resort development – CityCenter – that’s what you get to do. I’m a lucky gal.

Let’s start at the beginning…I began working on CityCenter over two years ago and let me tell you, pitching stories to journalists about an $8.5 billion development opening in the midst of a recession wasn’t the easiest job. However, as the months came and went and as the towers grew taller and began to take shape into this incredible city-within-a-city, people became intrigued by what CityCenter would bring to Las Vegas.

Fast forward to 11:30 p.m. December 16, 2009…the moment many of us had been waiting for. Opening right on schedule – defeating several obstacles and proving many disbelievers wrong – was CityCenter. I can’t begin to explain what it felt like the moment the public was introduced to CityCenter. Watching the fireworks shoot off the rooftop of ARIA was not only breathtaking; it was the highlight of my entire career. Five years in the making, two years of my personal hard work and countless hours of planning this remarkable opening and here it was…right before me. That single moment will forever be frozen in time. The cheering of the crowd, erupting fireworks and flashing cameras made every triumph and struggle of representing this extraordinary development completely worth it.

Just last week, I was part of an incredible PR team that hosted over 100 national and international journalists at ARIA Resort & Casino at CityCenter. Talk about event planning! From pitching the media (meaning many 7 a.m. morning starts to catch both east and west coast journalists – and lots and lots of coffee), to coordinating flight and hotel arrangements and over 100 customized itineraries, we had our work cut out for us. Over the four day media week, we saw Viva ELVISTM by Cirque du Soleil®, conducted property tours (showcasing CityCenter’s Fine Art Collection, sustainability initiatives, WET water features, among other elements), ate fantastic food, hosted culinary tastings, met with the chefs, ate more food, danced at Eva Longoria Parker’s new nightclub Eve, ate some more and capped off one evening at Haze Nightclub inside ARIA.

The best part of the entire experience was being able to connect with the journalists I have been working with over the past two years face-to-face. I am so privileged to walk away from this experience with incredible story opportunities underway, but more importantly, with newly formed friendships with some of the most insightful, down-to-earth and amazing people I have ever met.

Nobody said opening an $8.5 billion development in Las Vegas would be easy, but I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to be part of this unbelievable journey.

“With all the images, stories, articles and blogs written and produced about CityCenter in the past several weeks, one would have to be a resident of Pluto — or at least be without an Internet connection — to not know that CityCenter, the largest privately financed development, was opening after five years of construction.”

There’s never a dull day here, but some days are, well, more interesting than others.

Like Tuesday.

Our company was literally spread out across the country Tuesday, helping make news coast-to-coast and beyond.

CityCenter

CityCenter

Starting here in Las Vegas, the first hotel of CityCenter, Vdara, opened with a press conference attended by more than 100 members of the media. And, even before opening its doors, the spectacular city-within-a-city has generated more than 300 million domestic media impressions over the last three months alone. Check out the piece from NBC Nightly News here. This comes on the heels of some amazing coverage for CityCenter, including USA Today and the Los Angeles Times. Next up for CityCenter, MGM Mirage’s incredible $8.5 billion resort, is the opening of Crystals (including the amazing new, two-story Tiffany & Co.) on Thursday, Mandarin Oriental on Friday and ARIA on Dec. 16. Trust us, you have to see CityCenter to believe it.

While that was happening, we were also in New York helping AEG and Paris Las Vegas announce Barry Manilow’s new show coming to Paris in March. Barry will take over the gorgeous theater at Paris with a show built around love songs.   ”I’m actually going to focus on the fact that we are in the most romantic world called Paris,” Barry told the Associated Press. ”Since I sing such romantic songs, I thought that would be a really good place to do something like this.” You can see him on the Today Show here and Access Hollywood here.

Meanwhile, back at  the ranch… and we mean Wayne Newton’s ranch, CBS Sunday Morning was in town for two days of taping with Mr. Las Vegas himself. It’s going to be the definitive Wayne Newton profile, and it airs later this fall. You can learn more about his new show, “Once Before I Go,”  at www.tropicanalv.com.

And as if that wasn’t enough for one day, we also spent the evening at Caesars Palace celebrating Cher’s 100th performance on The Colosseum stage.

Just another day at Kirvin Doak…
