Working in an office with a majority of transplants from all over the contiguous United States, many of us at Kirvin Doak Communications go home for the holidays, making the trek back to the cities and small towns where we grew up. This year, however, a few of us decided to spend the Thanksgiving weekend in Las Vegas – our second home.

For those who celebrate, Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for your blessings, and my favorite part – feast on ridiculous amounts of food until you reach the certain level of fullness where you consider unbuttoning your pants for a little breathing room (I tend to refrain as it often crosses a line of appropriateness – depends on your audience, I suppose). At first, I questioned my decision on staying in town in order to save money for my flight home for Christmas. Originally from Ohio, it’s hard to get home as often as I would like with the obscene prices for flights, time zone changes, etc. However, I realized that after living in Las Vegas for more than a year, I have come to embrace the city as a little piece of home, or a second home with loved ones and dear friends that I know I will cherish for the rest of my life.

On Thanksgiving evening, I went over to a friend’s apartment and enjoyed the holiday with wine, massive quantities of turkey and great company (and the new episode of Glee, but that goes without saying). It was nice to reflect on the feelings of independence and maturity that we all felt in our lives; that we were content spending a holiday away from family, but still having that sense of peace and comfort of being with loved ones. Overall, it was a fantastic night and a holiday memory that I will treasure

“If there’s no chocolate in Heaven, I’m not going.”
― Jane Seabrook, Furry Logic Laugh at Life

That quotation pretty much sums up how I feel.  An avid believer in the healing powers of chocolate, when I found out Easter Seals Nevada would not only host their second annual “Cheers to Chocolate” event this October, but that I would be involved in the planning process, “excited” doesn’t even begin to describe my emotions.

Taking place at Tivoli Village here in Las Vegas, one of the most beautiful and scenic shopping experiences in the city with European-inspired architecture, “Cheers to Chocolate” is an evening full of delicious wines provided by Total Wine & More and chocolate treats of all kinds from vendors throughout the area.  It’s like Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory…for adults.  I took preparing for this event very seriously.  I didn’t eat lunch or dinner that day so that I would have room for (literally) all the chocolate. I’m talking—chocolate cupcakes, chocolate covered popcorn, chocolate strawberries, biscotti with chocolate flavors, chocolate vinegars (it sounds gross but is oh-so-good and also only 130 calories a bottle), braised short rib in a chocolate sauce, chocolate coffee, chocolate truffles–somebody check my pulse, I think I just went into diabetic shock just thinking about it again!

Paired with a silent auction of fabulous items and a special musical performance by The Phat Pack, “Cheers to Chocolate” donates the proceeds raised back to Easter Seals Nevada, helping them to serve more than 7,000 Nevadans living with disabilities.  Talk about a win-win (or a win-win-wine, if you will), I was ecstatic to be a part of such an important event.

The evening of October 20 rolled around and the perfect fall Vegas night opened its arms to us.  A cool breeze filled the outdoor venue and before we knew it, hundreds of Las Vegans were strolling down the now packed cobblestone streets of Tivoli, sampling a smorgasbord of chocolate treats, sipping wines from all around the world and bidding on silent auction items.  Twinkling pink Christmas lights lit up the trees and musical numbers from Broadway shows echoed through the night sky and for a moment, we were all a part of something bigger than ourselves.

And yes, the wines and chocolates were fantastic (have I mentioned the braised short rib in a chocolate sauce?), however my favorite part of the evening was seeing the Easter Seals Nevada team beaming with the success of the event. Tears in their eyes, they hugged one another tightly in recognition of the impact the funds raised will make in the lives of thousands of people throughout Nevada.  When I heard the words “We’ve nearly doubled last year’s attendance,” my heart swelled and I, too found myself blinking back tears.

As the evening came to a close, bottles of wine were nestled carefully back in their boxes and only a few abandoned truffle wrappers remained tousling in the breeze; a reminder of a divine evening and the pieces of ourselves we leave behind.  And if you ask me, I’d say the attendees of this year’s “Cheers to Chocolate” left pretty substantial ones.

However, I think I ate 14 cupcakes.

This is the true story…of 30 strangers…picked to live in Las Vegas…work at KDC and have their lives followed on Facebook and Twitter…to find out what happens…when people stop putting off their dreams…and start getting real…The Real World: Las Vegas.

Okay I admit—I am just as skeptical as the next person when it comes to “reality television,” (although I do get down with my girls from Real Housewives of Orange Country and let’s be real, when Keeping Up with the Kardashians is on I can’t look away from the TV, ah, but I digress…) But for some reason as I transitioned into my brand new life here in Las Vegas, I could not get The Real World’s opening theme out of my head!

It was something straight out of a movie, I swear: girl applies for job, girl graduates college, girl moves home for five days, girl gets job offer, girl hops in the car and high-tails it out of Missouri three days later.  And I’m driving through the flatlands of Missouri and Kansas (one road…the whole time…girl, don’t even get me started), the mountains of Colorado, the valleys of Utah, the red rocks of Arizona and finally Nevada and it all came rushing towards me at once: This is my life.

Throughout college we are led to believe the “real world” is scary—full of mortgages and bills and credit scores and car problems and in-laws and someone pour me a glass of wine already…  We are taught the real world is hard and we should try to stay in college forever.  But in my three brief weeks as a Las Vegas resident, I can already tell the “real world” is incredible.  It’s full of places to go and people to meet and events to attend and learning to cook and can we please talk about how fun it is to decorate an apartment?!

I can’t believe that this is the real world—and to be honest, I don’t know what we were all so afraid of in the first place.  Living?

So this is my “real world”… this is my true story of a young girl picked to live in Las Vegas and work at KDC and have my life followed on Facebook and Twitter, to find out what happens when I stop living in the Midwest and start getting real with myself.

Stay tuned,

Camille
