Game time

Sony recently announced the arrival of their ‘most powerful platform ever’ – the Playstation 4.  It’ll be hitting shelves this holiday season, as will a new version of Microsoft’svideogames_poster Xbox.  Well, Microsoft hasn’t actually announced the arrival of the new Xbox quite yet.  However, I’m sure they won’t be far behind now that Sony has made their big news splash.

I can only imagine how great the games will be given the new capabilities and technologies these machines will have.  On that note, I felt it was a good time to reflect on some of my favorite games from the current, and soon to be old, Xbox.  Here’s my list in no particular order.

  •  Skyrim

Any game that you can put more than 200 hours into and still want to keep playing is a winner in my books.

  •  The Mass Effect series

Lots of people had issues with the ending of Mass Effect 3.  I’d tell them to calm down, it was a great game and the ending was just fine.

  •  Dishonored

I never enjoyed stealth-based games…until this one.  Great game play and awesome atmosphere make this one I will not soon forget.

  •  Red Dead Redemption

Take Grand Theft Auto, replace the cars with horses and set it in the old west.  Yes please.

  •  The Walking Dead

Here is a game that really elevates story telling in video games to a whole new level.

  •  The Saints Row series

Not for everyone…but if you are looking for over the top humor and an open world to go crazy in, this is the game for you.

Yesterday, was Mother’s Day and as I ran around town finishing my errands clerks and servers wished me a “Happy Mother’s Day” – it sort of annoyed me as I am not a mother, I am not going to be a mother and I made a choice not to be a mother.  However, as I settled in for the evening I began to  realize that I am a mother of sorts.  I am the mother to my staff: Brad, Alison, Lindsey, Matt, Devin, Kristin, Shandi, Carolyn, Ryan, Wendy and Eleni at Kirvin Doak Communications.  If being a mother means glowing with pride for their accomplishments, cheering them on with their projects, giving them wings to fly and believing in them and their abilities – well then I am a pseudo mom.  If the joy of motherhood is anything close to the love, pride and happiness I feel for my staff then you can wish me a Happy Mother’s Day ever year.

I recently purchased an FM transmitter for my car.  If you’re unfamiliar with these, it basically allows you to listen to whatever is on your ipod or mobile device through your car’s radio.  Listening to my own music held me over for a while, but after listening to the same albums over and over again, I wanted something more.  That’s when I found a wealth of apps and podcasts.
First, the apps.  There are hundreds of free radio apps, but I recommend checking out TuneIn Radio.  This app is amazing, and best of all, it’s free!  It allows you to search for and listen to almost any radio station in the world, live! With that many options, you really can’t go wrong.
Personally, I’d recommend ABC Triple J, a station based out of Australia.  They play a great mix of music you would be hard pressed to hear on any local station and rarely, if ever, have commercials.  Just don’t let the time difference throw you off when they are talking about it being Friday when it is, sadly, only Thursday here in America.
Looking for an alternative to music?  Try downloading a podcast or two for your commute.  There are podcasts for almost every topic imaginable.  Some of my daily downloads that I’d highly recommend include The Nerdist and The Todd Glass Show.  These two update weekly (sometimes twice a week) and feature a wealth of special guests that will keep you laughing for hours.
Overall, I’d recommend simply taking some time to browse around, see what apps and podcasts are out there, give them a try and see if you can find something you really enjoy!

No, I’m not referring to the short-lived television show.  Instead, I’m talking about a weekend I recently spent celebrating a friend’s birthday by grilling out, riding wave runners, swimming in a river and lounging around on a beach.  Sounds like a weekend in California, right?  Wrong…it’s Laughlin, NV
A relatively short drive away from Vegas, Laughlin features a number of casino resorts lining the Colorado River, several golf courses, campgrounds and a number of outdoor activities involving the river.

How can you not have fun on one of these?

We spent an entire day enjoying the river from our covered campsite right on the river at Davis Camp.  I’d highly suggest checking this place out if you find yourself in the area.  Visitors can pay a small fee to enter for the day and enjoy the river.  The camp also rents out covered areas right on the water that house tables and grills.  We opted to rent out an area.
Following a day at the river, we spent the night at Harrah’s Laughlin.  I really enjoyed the place.  The property has nice rooms, a full beach complete with tiki huts and chairs, large casino, plenty of dining options and great service.  To me though, the greatest amenity is the fact that they offer $1.75 mimosas in their Beach Café.
So if you’re looking for a weekend out of the city and want to try something new…have a look at Laughlin, it just may surprise you!

On Tuesday, March 8, I had the pleasure of attending In Business Las Vegas’ “40 Under 40” event.  The celebration was held at TAO Nightclub inside The Venetian and honored 40 local professionals under 40 years old that have each made significant community and business accomplishments.  Any event  featuring delicious food and drinks is more than enough reason for me to add it to my schedule.  This time however, I was really there to support one of my clients, Chris Nelson of Blue Man Group.    He oversees 120 employees at Blue Man Group’s Las Vegas production at The Venetian and was one of the 40 professionals selected from more than 250 nominees by a panel of In Business staff members.

During the event, Greenspun Media Group Business Editor Richard Pérez-Feria announced that the group will be launching VEGAS INC this April.  Pérez-Feria  will serve as Editor-in-Chief.  As a big fan of In Business, I’m really excited to see what interesting new features will arise when this launches.

I’ve been attending the “40 Under 40” event the last couple years and I am very happy to notice that each year it seems to get better and better. It’s great to see increased support and recognition for individuals that have had positive impacts in both their respective industries and the community as a whole.

You can check out photos from the event here.
