February 2012

In honor of National Margarita Day it only seemed fitting to dish on a new restaurant that entered the Las Vegas dining sphere offering a killer tequila concoction. The world’s first Ramon Ayala’s Cocina & Cantina opened last Thursday at Primm Valley Casino Resorts in a true fiesta fashion. When I started on the project, I have to admit I was unaware of the stature that Ramon Ayala holds. The Mexican-American superstar has 50 years of experience in the music industry, producing 105 albums, gracing more than 150 stages across the United States and Mexico as well as starring in 13 feature films and winning four Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards. Now that is was I call a roster of allocates!

The grand opening began with a ribbon cutting ceremony shortly after 5 p.m. The buzz escalated as Ayala made his way across the casino floor, admiring fans stopping the proclaimed King of the Accordion for pictures and autographs. Upon arriving at his self-title restaurant, he was welcomed by a sea of Primm Valley executives and cantina staff surrounding a crimson ribbon accented with red hot peppers to offer a unique Mexican flare. Ayala and a Primm executive shared the honor of cutting the ribbon with oversized scissors and an eruption of applause filled the casino.

The highlight of my time with Ayala was taking him back to the kitchen to ceresin the chopping blocks.  The Head Chef donned Ayala with a chef toque and told him to whip up a signature dish. With grace, he prepared an order of taquitos as staff overlooked his techniques and eye for detail. He finished off the dish with just the right amount of his favorite garnishes and presented it to an applauding audience. Ayala made it very apparent that the kitchen was his second home.

If you are ever out in the Primm neighborhood, make sure to stop by the new Mexican restaurant that has a full menu of authentic cuisine. Plus 10 brands of tequila ready to be mixed into specialty margaritas and a live mariachi band beacons for one heck of a rowdy evening.

Cheers!

64,551. That’s the number of people who witnessed the biggest rugby event to ever take place on U.S. soil while attending the three-day USA Sevens tournament this past weekend in Las Vegas. By the way, that was a record-breaking attendance number (ah, modesty).

I was pitch-side (field-side for non-rugby folks) for the entire event, and the atmosphere was amazing! Fans (some drunk, some sober, all happy) were there representing all of the 16 international nations competing in the tournament, and their passion for the teams was electric. The audience of 30,323 on Saturday, Feb. 11 was the single largest crowd to ever watch a live rugby event in the United States.

I didn’t know much about rugby going into this event, but I’ll be a fan forever after what I witnessed over the weekend. Rugby sevens (a faster paced version of traditional rugby) combines the best elements of football, soccer (without all the wimpy, fake falls) and wrestling. The action is nonstop (14-minute games), there’s tons of scoring, the groups of international fans create an amazing party atmosphere and, ladies, in case you weren’t sold, the players are in phenomenal shape and damn handsome, too! Show of Handsome

While the total attendance number may not seem huge to those who are used to seeing 100,000 at a college football game, it proves that rugby is finally starting to resonate with an American audience after serving as one of the most popular international sports for generations. This sport is on the precipice of a breakthrough in the U.S., and sports fans would be wise to jump on the bandwagon now.

I, for one, cannot wait until next year’s USA Sevens. This event is perfect for Las Vegas with its huge international appeal, and I look forward to seeing at least 80,000 fans at USA Sevens 2013!

Congratulations to PEEPSHOW at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. The amazing cast marked such an amazing milestone on Monday, February 6, 2012. Already 1,000 shows under their belt and they are still going strong!

I’ve had the pleasure of working on PEEPSHOW for the past 7 months, and it’s such a remarkable accomplishment for a production show, especially in Las Vegas. The show itself is a lot of fun and the amount of talented performers that work in the show are incredible! And it also helps to have Miss Las Vegas herself, Holly Madison headline the show. On the night of the special occasion, the cast celebrated with a champagne toast and a lovely, three-tiered cupcake display provided by Retro Bakery! The cupcakes were delicious and the top cake made of red velvet was designed to replicate Holly’s book in the show’s opener with the words “Happy 1,000 Shows!”

Even Holly tweeted the show’s triumphant success by saying: “I can’t believe it’s been 1,000 shows already! So much fun!!”

Again, CONGRATULATIONS to PEEPSHOW for a fabulous 1,000 performances and here’s to another 1,000!

When The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino announced it would be teaming up with the world’s most notorious band MÖTLEY CRÜE, I was extremely excited because I knew this was going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity. I knew very little about the band when we first announced the show back in December 2011 but as each week goes by, I find myself loving them a little more.

MÖTLEY CRÜE is comprised of Vince Neil (vocals), Mick Mars (guitars), Nikki Sixx (bass) and Tommy Lee (drums).  They’ve been around for more than three decades! They’ve introduced the world to songs such as “Kickstart my Heart,” “Shout at the Devil,” “Girls, Girls, Girls,” “Dr. Feelgood” and many, many more. They have accumulated album sales exceeding 80 million worldwide, seven platinum or multi-platinum albums, 22 “Top 40” mainstream rock hits, six “Top 20” pop singles, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, three Grammy nominations and countless sold out gigs across the globe.

As I had never experienced a MÖTLEY CRÜE show before, I didn’t know what to expect but let me tell you, the band has really lived up to its reputation for being over-the-top. It is definitely a one-of-a-kind, only-in-Vegas experience. The show is an incredibly interactive production unlike anything seen in their previous shows. The second you walk into the property, you enter a “Carnival of Sins” extravaganza with stilt walkers, fun house mirrors on your way to the box office and even the hotel bar is draped to look like the inside of a circus tent. That is just the beginning because the show gets crazier! Mötley Crüe in Sin City features fire breathers, acrobats and Tommy Lee’s 360 degree drum coaster, where he literally plays his drums while riding a rollercoaster upside down. AMAZING!
The show is a must-see and even if you’re not a fan, you’ll leave as one.

Remaining dates include February 8, 10 – 12, 14 – 15 and 17 – 19. Tickets start at $45 and are on sale now at the Hard Rock Hotel Box Office, online at hardrockhotel.com, ticketmaster.com or charge-by-phone at 800.745.3000.

Day 30 of hats and it is not my last day. By popular demand I’m extending the challenge until tomorrow. Stay tuned for the big finish. Today I’m celebrating the Irish green for luck and wearing a dress from my beautiful Aunt Dianne. Enjoy!

Dear Guys,

Good luck planning for Valentine’s Day this year. Seriously, good luck. It’s in less than two weeks by the way. This is basically the Super Bowl (fittingly just one week after the real Super Bowl) for your significant other, should you have one (bless you, single men), and subtly dropped hints for advice are usually answered with “I just want something romantic.” Helpful.

So, just what the hell does that mean? Let’s go with the clichéd “Webster’s defines romantic as” line here. Romantic as an adjective is 1) consisting of or resembling a romance, 2) having no basis in fact, 3) impractical in conception or plan. While temped to expound on definitions two and three, I won’t (but, seriously, read number three).

The great thing about living in Las Vegas, though, is that it’s pretty hard to go wrong when it comes to generating romance on Valentine’s Day. How about trying a nice dinner date? Whether you make reservations at one of the Strip’s more romantic spots, say Sage at Aria, or decide to take things off-the-Strip, say the intimate Vintner Grill in Summerlin, the city’s myriad world-class dining options are a can’t miss. Just don’t get cheap on the dessert.

Brave stupid men, like me, will try to cook for their significant other. A good recipe helps, and I hear culinary skills do, too. I suggest lots of wine (everything tastes better when you’re buzzed!) and not burning anything. You can undo undercooked, but overcooked…not so much (mmm jerky!).  Have this movie on deck to complement dinner, and you just hit yourself a homerun, sir.

Maybe a night of music is your thing. Celebrate the weekend before the big day by taking your date to one of the Wynn nightclubs, XS or Tryst, and fist pump in unison to world-class DJs whilst celebrating your love. Or hit up Book & Stage at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas should the indie music scene be your shared tone of choice. Once again, the options are practically endless.

When it comes to gifts, I’m going to shamelessly plug a client and say just buy something from Tiffany & Co. (four locations on the Vegas Strip!).  Go ahead and try to make your significant other frown after giving them a Blue Box. You can’t. Stop trying…you really can’t. Flowers and candy of some sort, while clichéd, always seem to make girls happy, too.

In all sincerity, guys, enjoy it if you’ve found someone with whom you can share this day. Most of us are loud, obnoxious and make our significant others miserable with our infatuation with sports and video games. If you found someone who actually, truly enjoys your presence, then celebrate that fact, and whether this is your first, 20th, or 50th Feb. 14 with that person, enjoy all that Vegas has to offer when it comes to celebrating.

Cheers,
Matt Guidish
