During my first week at Kirvin Doak I had the opportunity to attend a JUKARI Fit to Flex class, the latest workout created by Reebok and Cirque du Soleil, located at Bellagio. Since it was my first week at a new job, most of my days were filled with confusion and blank stares, but I knew this class was something I could conquer without bewilderment and I was excited about it.

When I arrived at Bellagio, I was given a tour of the spa.  I couldn’t believe my eyes, this was amazing.  It was luxury and relaxation at its finest and I had never seen anything like it.  Once I had settled in, I headed over to the gym where I was greeted by the instructor inside a room that looked like a dance studio.  Once the class started, the instructor introduced us to the JUKARI band, a piece of elastic about five feet in length and developed to improve flexibility, balance and muscle endurance.  We stretched with the band, wrapped it around our bodies, created resistance with it and swung it around in every which way.  I did not look glamorous, but I knew it was working because I could start to feel my heart pumping.  As we continued using the JUKARI band, I could feel myself stretching further and further and by the end of the class I was feeling like a Cirque Du Soleil performer.

When most people think about Las Vegas activities, health and fitness it not usually something that comes to mind.  I’m now learning that not only are there many fitness opportunities in Vegas, but they are some of the most unique and refined.
Spa & Salon Bellagio offers the 50-minute class Wednesday – Friday at 9 a.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m. Classes are $40 per person and include a day pass for the cardio center, spa vanity, wet areas and lockers. One of the things I love about public relations is how I am constantly learning new things about a variety of subjects. Recently, I have been transported back to a time and place when Nazis roamed and artists were forced into hiding. But I haven’t been learning about just any artist, I’ve been exploring one of the most famous artists of all time – Pablo Picasso.
For the past month I have been spreading the message of Jeff Mitchum’s newest acquisitions, extremely rare images of Picasso in his Paris studio during World War II, and met Jeff at KNPR’s studio for an interview.  The photographs to be discussed were shot by Richard Ham and offer a glimpse into Picasso’s private life. Writing the press materials was a lesson in history, but what was particularly interesting was hearing Jeff’s intimate knowledge on the subject (if he hadn’t become a fine art photographer, he would have been a teacher).
When the host of State of Nevada asked him what makes a portrait famous, Jeff remarked that it is always the eyes. He went on to talk about Picasso’s personality and how he had a tendency to flit from one subject to another, not necessarily with his speech, but with his eyes. He was always moving and taking in every detail of his surroundings. So, for Ham to have captured Picasso’s eyes in such a way as to offer the observer a glimpse of stillness was an extraordinary accomplishment in itself. After hearing Jeff’s comment, I looked at the images more closely and it was absolutely true. You can see Picasso’s eyes, full of intrigue and mystery, either intently focused or looking off into the distance at something that had caught his attention. It makes me wonder what genius was bubbling up from the depths at that very moment.
I also learned a story behind a postcard of Picasso’s portraying his famous image Guernica. The painting, and postcard, shows the bombing of the city by Spanish Nationalist forces during the Spanish Civil War. When the Nazis found the circulating postcard, they deemed it “decadent” and brought it to the doorsteps of Picasso to ask the artist if he had done this. Picasso apparently replied, “No, you did this.” Needless to say, he went into hiding shortly after. Now, some 65 years later, these rare photographs are on display and available to the public at Jeff’s gallery inside Bellagio. They are truly remarkable portraits of a remarkable man with a remarkable story and a definite must-see in Las Vegas.

One of my favorite parts about my job is being able to tap into the creative side of my brain and work with my colleagues and clients to generate new, innovative ideas.

One of our clients, Ravella at Lake Las Vegas, wanted to create a signature Thursday evening event at The Spa at Ravella. Working together, we began brainstorming. Some crazy ideas were thrown around which left many of us doubled over laughing but led to more discussions and ideas. We finally settled on Ravella ‘Sip & Spa’ Thursdays – a fashionable ladies’ night out featuring hot spa/salon treatments and cool signature cocktails.

The initial series included classic pairings such as Martinis & Manicures, Mojitos & Makeovers and Mai Tais & Massages. The weekly events were a success, selling out each week. Happy hour spots are abundant in Vegas and it was refreshing to see local ladies enjoying an alternative “happy hour” as they chatted over cocktails while being pampered.

In celebration of the success of the initial series and the holiday season, The Spa will offer festive holiday treatment and cocktail pairings throughout December. I am excited about the entire series and hope to round up a few girls from the office to attend at least one event – my vote goes for Reindeeritas & Relaxation or Eggnog & Eye Lashes. During this busy time of year, I can’t imagine anything better!

Starting from scratch to create a signature event was challenging at first but has turned out to be one of the more memorable, fun and rewarding projects that I have taken on in my first year at Kirvin Doak Communications.

Cost to attend any Holiday ‘Sip & Spa’ event is $25 or $10 without a spa treatment. Credit card and advanced reservations are required with 24-hour cancellation. Call 702.567.4600 to reserve your space! Click here for more information.

What could be better than an afternoon of designer fashions mixed with some holiday cheer? If you are drawing a blank, then you’re on the right track!

On Sunday, I had the esteemed pleasure of attending a Communities In Schools of Nevada benefit that welcomed fashionistas and their children to Stella McCartney inside Crystals at CityCenter.  A unique take on a fundraiser, Stella McCartney transformed their store into a kid’s haven complete with cookie decorating stations, a photo booth and makeshift hair salon where little divas and studs could get a new do from Square Salon. Even a well known balloon artist was making creations from bicycles to Spiderman and even a flower bracelet that I happened to don during the event.

My obsession with fur was only teased as Stella McCartney donated an eco-fur handbag garnished with chain-link accents and allowed CISN to auction it off. If it wasn’t for my need to purchase Christmas presents for family and friends, I may have splurged on the trendy bag.

As children were sidetracked with ample activities, ladies were able to hit the racks and browse through the British designer’s collection. Dresses seemed to be the hot ticket item as the designs exuded femininity, perfect for the plethora of holiday cocktail parties one has the attend in December. The cash wrap remained busy throughout the entire three hour party and not a lady left empty handed.

By the end of the fashionable fare, supporters helped raise more than $5,000 for Communities In Schools as the store graciously donated a portion of all sales back to the nonprofit that helps at-risk children in Nevada.

Across the country a lot of people spend their Sunday evenings dreading what they know is coming in a few short hours: the sound of their alarm clock Monday morning, signaling the beginning of the long and often stressful work week.  This is probably especially true the Sunday following Thanksgiving, when people want to continue to bask in the holiday laze of family, food and football.  It is hard, after all, to leave the comfort of hometowns and sweatpants for the office.

I, however, experienced something quite different this past Sunday, Nov. 27.  While most of my Kirvin Doak co-workers were traveling back to Las Vegas, I sat in the emergency room waiting in agony to find out what was wrong with me.  As the extreme pain in my stomach continued to grow, nurses and doctors continued to run more tests.  Waiting for the results of blood work, a CAT scan, ultrasound and a few other unpleasant procedures, I became more and more concerned that whatever was going on wasn’t simply a bad case of the flu or food poisoning.

“What’s going on?” I asked my mother, “What’s going to happen?”

“I don’t know, honey,” she said.  “We have to wait to see when we get the tests back.”

“But I want to go to work tomorrow,” I cried, never before realizing how much I really love my job.

What ended up happening was an emergency appendectomy Sunday night.  I was released from the hospital Monday evening, and when I got home I received a visit from none other than Terri Maruca – a reminder of why I wanted so badly to get back to the office.

Terri brought me a baby Christmas tree, a card signed by my colleagues and their get well wishes.  While others may not understand, this level of personal care is what makes Kirvin Doak Communications such a great agency to work at and to be represented by.

Wednesday afternoon, despite my mother’s protests, I returned to Kirvin Doak, and although I’m still a bit tired and sore from the surgery – man, did it feel great to be out of bed and back in the office.

I was honored to be a member of the Team:  Just Pink It for this year’s Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure in San Diego.   We were a team of nine with members from Las Vegas, Phoenix and San Diego:  Melissa, Wendy, Shawn, Jen, Susan, Bob, Lauren and Erica.  We all had our own reason for walking in the 3-Day.

We walked for 3 days approximately 20 miles per day.  We slept in tents.  We took showers in semi-trailers.  We walked.   We went to bed at 8 p.m. We ate our lunch in parks sitting on the grass with our shoes off.  We didn’t have access to electricity.  We walked.  We used Porta-Potties.  We walked.  We were cheered on by supporters, family and volunteers.  We got blisters.  We were amazed by the courage of survivors.  We walked.  We celebrated the power of the individual and the power of many.  We walked.

There were over 3,700 who walked with us in San Diego.  It was truly an experience of a lifetime.  It was hard.  We were tired.   However, what we did is nothing compared to the women and men who fight breast cancer daily.  What we did was merely take one step closer to ending breast cancer forever…because everyone deserves a lifetime.  Just Pink It.
