June 2011

There is no better cure for a “case of the Mondays” than a craft beer festival to re-launch the fabulous menu of pub grub at The Pub at Monte Carlo. Last Monday, I immersed myself in just that. Not only was I lucky enough to sample the brews of Pyramid, Blue Moon, Sin City Brewing Co., Sierra Nevada, Leinenkugel, Woodchuck, Stella, Leffe, Hoegaarden and more, but I got my hands on a coveted Locals Card. This card gets me automatic all-day happy hour Monday-Friday and 50% off beer on Sundays upon every return visit – now that’s refreshing.

Aside from mingling with some of my favorite local journalists and clients, The Pub’s new menu had to be the highlight of the event for me. All of the food is delicious, but there are three dishes that you cannot miss:

1. The Pub Crunchy Potato is pure heaven – a deep fried ball of mashed potatoes sprinkled with bacon and accompanied by spicy ketchup dipping sauce.
2. While such a decadent hors d’oeuvre is impossible to beat, second place undoubtedly went to their famed sliders in Ground Beef with melted cheddar cheese, crisp lettuce, sliced tomato, red onion and The Pub secret sauce and Pulled Pork varieties.
3. Another new dish to take note of is The Pub’s Wood-Fired Flat Breads. I’m partial to the BBQ Chicken with red onion and cilantro but also heard rave reviews of the Grilled Vegetable and Braised Short Rib.

On top of the phenomenal fare, The Pub unveiled its new Beer Lockers – a unique amenity which guests can earn by enjoying all 136 beers on tap or by spending $5,000 on beer within one year. While a feat like that may be out of my league, I can’t wait to feel like a VIP when I return with my Locals Card!

Golden Rainbow celebrated 25 years of “Ribbon of Life” on Sunday, June 26 at Paris Las Vegas Hotel. After hearing so many great things about the fundraising production, my expectations were high. However, no recap or friendly review could come close to justifying the amount of talent I witnessed.

“Ribbon of Life” is the only ticket in town that allows the audience to see performers from almost every show on the Strip in one night. Each production is original and can only be seen at Golden Rainbow’s benefit. Las Vegas’ major headlining shows including THE LION KING, Human Nature, PEEPSHOW, Fantasy, Jubilee! and more participated in this year’s show performing musical classics like “Big Spender,” “Defying Gravity,” “Everything I Am,” “Footloose,” “The Color Purple” and more. Talents like Clint Holmes captured the crowd’s hearts with his rendition of “West Side Story,” earning a standing ovation and George Wallace’s quirky humor gave the show a refreshing comedic spin. Even the little ones got in on the action, charming “Ribbon of Life” attendees with a cute superhero number. In addition, PEEPSHOW headliner and co-star of E!’s “Holly’s World” Josh Strickland stunned the theatre with an emotional performance of Tarzan’s “Everything I Am.”

All participating performers donated their time to Golden Rainbow’s cause and 100 percent of ticket sales will directly benefit southern Nevadans affected by HIV/AIDS. Despite the looming cliché of tough economic times, “Ribbon of Life” drew a record-setting crowd with 1,158 people in attendance and raised more than $151,000, surpassing the previous year’s goal by $20,000.

Following the spectacular, show attendees enjoyed an after-party at Chateau Nightclub and Gardens and celebrated with a silent auction, music, cocktails and a cake designed by Freed’s Bakery of Las Vegas.

Congratulations to Golden Rainbow on 25 “Ribbon of Life” spectaculars and 25 years of service to the Las Vegas community. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for next year!

In a city that has a wildly famous reputation for over-the-top experiences, there is nothing like reading about the charity and generosity of our community that brings me back to reality.  Last week, I didn’t just get to read about it, but I witnessed it when Wayne Newton welcomed 200 rescued lovebirds into his 42 acre estate which he fondly calls Casa de Shenandoah.

Wayne had recently been contacted by Animal Planet’s documentary show Confessions: Animal Hoarding, to see if he would be willing to adopt the 200 black masked lovebirds that were living freely in a couple’s home.  Recognizing they could no longer care for the birds, the couple agreed to have the birds relocated to Casa de Shenandoah.  A known animal lover with 54 Arabian horses, dozens of peacocks, African penguins, wallabies, sloths and a number of different types of birds, Wayne was happy to open his home to the birds that will be looked after by professional animal caretakers.

Having the opportunity to be there for the delivery of the birds was a truly special experience that I won’t soon forget.  When I arrived at Casa de Shenadoah that afternoon, they were still building the birds’ new sanctuary.  Wayne’s staff went to great lengths to make sure they would have a spacious environment full of carefully placed perches for them to sit and play on. When the enclosure was finally finished, the staff moved all 200 birds into their new home.  Their vibrant blue and green coloring was a sight to see when they were all together.  After a little coaxing, the lovebirds ate their first meal full of fresh fruits and vegetables, which is more then I can say about my lunch that day.  Those birds eat better then I do!

Seeing the mass of birds in their new sanctuary, it’s hard to imagine them living in someone’s home, but it feels good to know they will be well taken care of for years to come.  Wayne was right; the birds make a beautiful addition to Casa de Shenandoah. I can’t wait for everyone to be able to see them and the rest of Wayne Newton’s animals when Casa de Shenandoah opens to the public at the end of the year!

While waiting to meet Jeff Mitchum for the first time, I found myself wandering through his gallery at Bellagio completely engrossed in the images before me. Being an avid traveler and knowing the impact a place can have on a soul, it was clear that whoever took the time and effort to capture these moments had a true passion for life. It was hard to choose a favorite, but the photo that stole my heart was called “Odysea.” The image shows the sun dipping into vast water, backed by clouds carrying brilliant shades of red; the pilings of a once great pier stretch into the sea and seem to welcome travelers returning from faraway lands and long-lasting journeys. Recently settling in Las Vegas after years of traveling and becoming a mother for the first time, the image connected to an inner feeling I had of finally “coming home.” For me, to say the least, the image and title was perfectly apropos.

The time had come to meet the artist and he was, based on first impression, exactly what someone would imagine him to be; calm, confident and dressed as if ready to go on an adventure at a moment’s notice. Then he began talking about his artwork and his passion rang through loud and clear. To capture “The Man” Jeff rode a bike packed with gear 89 miles into Denali National Park and waited for a moose to wake up from a five hour siesta. He returned to the Eastern Sierras again and again and again before the landscape offered the vision he had imagined in “Third Day.” He endured beating rain and freezing temperatures to capture the lighthouse and brilliant shades of blue in “Skynight.” In fact, the passion for his craft didn’t just ring through, it bellowed from the highest mountain.

In addition to a lovely gift, one of Jeff’s books that he graciously signed for me, I came away from the meeting with a sense of appreciation. The truth is, no matter what you do in life, whether a fine art photographer or a Las Vegas publicist, to have passion for everything you do at each moment is the secret to a fulfilling life. Passion makes everything brighter and when someone shines brightly, they bring everyone around them out of darkness.

A tweetup, for those who may not know, is by definition a social gathering or get together with friends and followers from Twitter. At the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Tweetup on Wednesday, June 15, new and old friends alike gathered at The Sporting House inside New York-New York Hotel & Casino to show support for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. For a $10 donation, guests enjoyed a private seating area to watch Game 7 of the NHL finals, appetizers and the positive sentiment from showing support for a cause that impacts the lives of children and their families every day.

Guests began arriving shortly before 5:30 p.m. for the tweetup and immediately began generating buzz on Twitter for the tournament, Sept. 25 – Oct. 2 at TPC Summerlin and the Shriners Hospitals for Children.  Ready to tweet the night away, I was excited to see how many people from the local community and members of the media who came out to offer their patronage.

At the entrance each guest was given a golf tee to redeem for a signature cocktail deemed “Fairway to Heaven,” and one ticket to the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Appetizers, provided by The Sporting House, included a new twist on shrimp cocktail and delectable lamb chops and were a big hit with all the guests. Throughout the evening, raffle winners were announced and were excited to win prizes such as Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open merchandise and a limited edition print of The Hill, TPC Summerlin’s hospitality venue.

The positive energy could be felt in the air as new friends mingled and one of the tournament’s own, Mike Zampini, celebrated his birthday complete with an Ohio State University-themed chocolate mousse cake.

After a successful evening, the tweetup raised $500 for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. But that’s not it—the evening will be remembered by many as a night that displayed the strength of a community’s love for a wonderful cause.

One of the outstanding clients that Kirvin Doak Communications is proud to represent is The Smith Center for the Performing Arts.  Given that this new performing arts center will be the epicenter of arts and culture in Las Vegas, it is inspiring to be part of a project that will literally change Southern Nevada.

Over the past few months, The Smith Center has been celebrating milestone after milestone leading up to the March 2012 opening.  From the fundraising efforts to raising the Bell Tower to announcing the Broadway Las Vegas season, the center is well on their way to being the artistic foundation of the area.

Last week, I was proud to be present at the Carillon Bell unveiling at the site of The Smith Center.  Seeing generations of families, individual supporters and companies alike reinforced the importance of such a venue.  As the 46 silver bells are raised into the tower, it will become Nevada’s first Carillon Bell tower and one of the few bell towers of this magnitude in a performing arts center anywhere.  It is sure to add to the pride The Smith Center will bring to the people of Las Vegas.

As great as it is working on such a positive, community-changing project like The Smith Center, it is amazing to know that the company you work puts its money where its press releases and advertising is by supporting great projects like the center. When arriving at the construction site, I was in awe of the gleaming bells of varying sizes and the numerous supporters turning out to commemorate their contribution with a photo.  What I loved even more was seeing Kirvin Doak Communications had its very own bell, a legacy of the company’s own support of this amazing center.

Once raised into the tower, no one will be able to see the our name – or that of the 46 others that supported the bell fundraising campaign. But we’ll know it’s there, and when it rings, it will be playing our tune.

Many of us often claim to be having a rough day. Too much stress. Too little respect. Not enough sleep. The list goes on and on. Now, take a minute and think about having the lives of 33 human beings dependant on your job performance over the course of nearly 70 days. What do you think about your rough days now?

I recently had the opportunity to meet and speak with James Stefanic during the 26th Annual Elko Mining Expo. Who? You may be asking yourself. Well, Mr. Stefanic was one of the head engineers in charge of drilling during an extremely important project in Chile from August through October 2010. Stefanic has drilled for everything from oil to gas to minerals in his multiple decades on the job, but during his project in Chile, he was drilling for something for which he had never expected or planned, human beings.

For those unfamiliar with this story, 33 Chilean miners were trapped in August 2010 after their mine collapsed during a shift. Immediately, Chilean government officials started working on a plan to rescue the miners, and Stefanic was one of the first people they called. The effort to first locate the miners and then bring them from 2,300 feet underground to the surface was long and arduous. The rescue took many people and several plans before the famed “Plan B” was executed to perfection over the course of two days in October.

Stefanic was the keynote speaker during the Elko Mining Expo’s opening banquet and gave attendees a detailed breakdown of all the efforts, planning and struggles that went into rescuing the 33 miners. Needless to say, his speech was a revelation, but not because of the end result. Yes, the fact that all 33 men were rescued in good health is amazing; however, it was Stefanic himself who was so impressive.

Here was a man who helped lead an operation over two months that saved lives, yet he stood before the group in Elko as down-to-Earth and soft-spoken as any person I’ve ever met. He simply claimed to be lucky to have had a chance to help. After his speech, I had the opportunity to have a drink at a local bar with Stefanic and learned even more about him. During his time as a drilling engineer, he has lived all over the world, met two presidents (including President Obama after the Chilean rescue), escaped a civil war while on the job, raised a family, maintained a loving marriage and served as the savior of 33 human beings.

Next time you’re having a rough day, think about Mr. Stefanic and what he had to endure for 69 days in 2010. I thought I had met some interesting people in my life, but I had to visit the small town of Elko, NV to meet someone who blew them all away.

Do you love football, like I love football?  Are you anxiously waiting for the NFL to figure out this lockout? Well, there is another professional football league that is going to play ball this season – the United Football League.   The league enters its third season with many names you will know like Jerry Glanville, Marty Schottenheimer, Jim Fassel and Dennis Green.  The quality of play is expected to be even better this year with more recognizable and experienced NFL players making up the teams’ rosters.
We have a team in Las Vegas called the Locomotives and they are the two-time defending UFL champions.  I’m sorry to say that I haven’t been to one of their games, but that is going to change this season.  Recently, our agency began working with team and I am impressed with every aspect of the Locos and the UFL overall.   Head Coach Fassel is committed and dedicated to making the Locos – Las Vegas’ home team.  The front office staff is motivated, passionate and hard-working.  They love what they do and they want you to fall in love with the Locos too.

It’s only an eight game season with each team playing four games at home.  The good news is that you won’t have to break the piggy bank to attend a Locos home game at Sam Boyd Stadium.   Season ticket packages are available for $120, $80, $60 and $40 per seat and that includes a stadium parking pass.  That is a deal.  Be at the stadium on Saturday, Aug. 27  when the Locos take the field against Omaha.   The Locos are going for a three-peat and providing their fans an exciting experience.  Call 702.877.LOCO to get your tickets now.

I’ll be there for their home opener and I might even paint my face.  Go Locos!

I was recently offered the opportunity to work on the public relations efforts for world-renowned dance crew and Monte Carlo headliner, Jabbawockeez.  Being a huge fan of the show and having great respect for their craft coming from a dance background myself, I jumped at the opportunity.  One of my very first projects was to go to Los Angeles with them last Thursday to facilitate interview requests while filming the season six finale of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew. I’ve had some great “moments” happen to me while working here the last five years, but this experience might just be my favorite 24 hours at Kirvin Doak.

As I arrived at the Warner Brothers lot, on one of those perfect 80 degree California days, I was quickly whisked into Stage 21 to watch dress rehearsals.  There, I had the chance to see the two finalists, IaMmE and ICONic Boyz, as well as all five past season champions take the stage.  I was eager to see the Jabbawockeez routine as I knew they had been working hard on a performance that included 30 extra Jabbawockeez to complete their vision. I was blown away.

After rehearsals were done, we all got a short break for dinner and ran through a series of TV interviews. Before we knew it, it was show time!
The hustle and bustle backstage was exciting! Costumes were flying, sets were being moved and the crowd was warming up. Soon enough, the Jabbawockeez were ushered out of their dressing room and all 37 of them flooded the stage for a performance that gave the audience a glimpse into their critically acclaimed show at Monte Carlo.  The surprises for the fans didn’t stop there. Just when you thought it was over, they pulled out their secret weapon, the “baby-wockee,” out of a massive stereo prop and she (yes, a 6 year-old girl!) stole the entire show.

When the crowd gave multiple standing ovations and started chanting “Jabba! Jabba! Jabba!” it almost brought tears to my eyes.  I haven’t worked on them very long, but knowing their passion for what they do and how hard they’ve worked to get to this far in five short years, I am very proud of them.  As we all packed up and drove off the studio lot, I found myself feeling very thankful that they brought me in to see their world first-hand for this special day.
